South Africa extend lead
Rediff – Dec 28, 2006
f particular interest was the Sreesanth-Nel confrontation — their first real set-to after the break dance that rocked the world. Nel kicked it off in the first full over after lunch with a short ball that thumped into Sreesanth’s body; the bowler then ran the length of the pitch hand waving overhead in obvious parody. Another lifter and Sreesanth rose with it cocked his wrists and worked it through the slips to the third man boundary then ran to the bowler’s end of the pitch bat waving emphatically if not with the rowdy revelry of Johannesburg (Perhaps he was paying heed to his mother who told him not to irritate the tall fast bowler too much who knows?)An irritated Nel responded with a body ball – a swinging full toss at hip height which had Sreesanth unmoved and the umpires in animated conversation. Vice captain VVS Laxman figured the side show had to end; in Nel’s next over he pointedly turned down three singles in four balls then took one off the fifth. Sreesanth promptly cocked a snook at his senior by playing an off drive foot forward elbow classically high that sent the ball screaming to the fence.

ur favorite performance of the year came from Spain. Dancer Israel Galvan?s Chicago debut at the Harold Washington Library in February as part of the Flamenco le! festival was nothing if not revelatory. The dancing soloist featured a guitarist and vocalist in a minimalist setup. Galvan?s razor-sharp dancing fast-to-invisible speed of attack and crystal-clear sense of time space and direction were like the crack of a whip. He is one of the best types of innovators: the kind who can see through the sentimental trappings of his art and reduce it to its potent classic bones. ne of the more adventurous takes on the globalist theme was the Body Breaks: Butoh Breakdancing and Beyond a festival comparing Japanese Butoh dance to American break dancing. Curator Nicole LeGette showed vision and imagination in assembling this ambitious program that featured national and international artists and scholars in performances workshops and discussions around Chicago in March… Galvan?s razor-sharp dancing fast-to-invisible speed of attack and crystal-clear sense of time space and direction were like the crack of a whip. Curator Nicole LeGette showed vision and imagination in assembling this ambitious program that featured national and international artists and scholars in performances workshops and discussions around Chicago in March. A standout event of this fest was when Japanese soloist Yumiko Yoshioka performed in a free show at the Chicago Cultural Center that also included the break-dancing crew Brickheadz. Young Chicagoans who came to see the Brickheadz?s handstands and headspins were also thrown into the surreal universe of Before the Dawn in which Yoshioka?s sinewy immensely expressive body evoked creaturelike otherworldly life forms. In August typically a fallow time in the dance season the movers and shakers behind the Dance Chicago festival assembled the Dutch National Ballet Project in which members of the local scene worked in collaboration with dancers from the Dutch National Ballet.
