Hindu – Dec 30, 2006
“Fortunately I got a dream role in `Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi’. And recently the dance show `Jhalak Dikhla Ja’ broke all records and gave me a chance to hone my dancing skills. As I am looking for a break in Bollywood my dancing skills will definitely help me to make an impact on the big screen. Since I have essayed the role of Jassi I will be more comfortable playing a character artiste in Hindi films. I have received some offers from Bollywood and am going through some of the scripts” adds Mona. Revealing that she will soon host a reality show on television Mona says: “The show’s name is `Extreme Makevover’ in which victims of acid attacks whose faces have got disfigured would be given plastic surgery by a panel of doctors. ” About her experience so far playing the role of a radio jockey on Big 92.

Another boy Pati Nima 14 who was hit in the neck by a stray bullet during the war is determined to pose by a battered blue Mercedes. He makes his way down three stairs but stumbles. Tangled in his crutches his hands cannot break his fall. His skull makes a dull thud as it strikes a concrete step. Wincing he quickly struggles upright for his portrait the bump on his head rising as he smiles through watery eyes. Run on a shoestring budget provided by donors and on slim profits from a small roadside bar IPVRC provides basic food and spartan shelter for its 100 children in a house bereft of furniture. Most sleep curled together without blankets on hard tiles rubbed smooth by small bodies… Using a digital projector we give the kids a slideshow of photos I’ve taken during visits to the centre. They cheer as they see themselves on screen. The laughter dancing and joking go on late into the night. For a while at least it’s easy to forget Congo’s troubles. AlertNet news is provided by.

Under Madam Speaker Conflict Gives Way to Collaboration
New York Times – Dec 30, 2006
But over the last year Ms. Quinn 40 has broken with Council tradition and reshaped the institution from a theater of opposition to a rigidly disciplined body where in exchange for private collaboration open dissent is barely tolerated. She has also emerged as an influential partner of the mayor pushing him to include more lower-cost housing in a tax break program for developers shepherding his waste plan through a not-in-my-backyard Council and expanding neighborhood input on West Side rezoning. High-stakes conflict between the city’s two most powerful officials has suddenly been replaced with a nonideological focus on effectiveness and collaboration. “Here you have a liberal Irish lesbian woman speaker working well with a Jewish Republican billionaire pragmatist mayor” said Douglas A. Muzzio a professor of public affairs at… Quinn said it brought order and discipline to the process. Then she charmed cajoled and fought the mayor into considering her call for an end to the so-called budget dance. In that process the executive branch outlines a budget in January or February with cuts to programs that the Council supports creating a hubbub of complaint bickering about priorities and finally a negotiation between the mayor and speaker over what stays and what goes. A June deadline usually ends the process. Quinn’s effect on the budget remains a subject of debate.

Eva Wiseman won’t be made to feel guilty about her record…

She sampled If I Were A Rich Man on her debut solo album and has recently hacked up the Sound f Music’s Lonely Goatherd for Wind It Up. Dizzee Rascal sampled Happy Talk from South Pacific and Jay-Z remade Hard Knock Life in 2002 welcoming the approval of Michael Jackson another musicals fan. Beautifully crafted tunes which soar over countless velvet seats are often enough to make the brave break into song. Stories of redemption and death and clam bakes and Nazis put to music and paraded through the Christmas TV schedules help lift the spirits and light the cooling flames of our December hearts. Hijacked by camp and marketed with shame there should be no disgrace in purchasing the new Sound f Music soundtrack or indeed any of the newly re-released musical gems which are commonly tainted with phlegmy irony. As usual Q Magazine got it wrong when earlier this year they compiled a list of the 50 records they reckon “we’re too embarrassed to admit we own. ” EL’s 1976 single Livin’ Thing topped a chart including More Than A Feeling by Boston (brilliant) S Club 7’s Don’t Stop Movin’ (fabulous) and 10cc’s I’m Not In Love… Be ashamed instead of hoarding flaccid non-music like Café Del Mar or Hed Kandi compilations. Be embarrassed about your brief foray into DJing and its accompanying illustrated mix-tapes. Hang your head at a carefully choreographed Saturday night dance routine if you must. But please for pleasure spare the guilt. · The Sound f Music London Palladium Cast Album is out now.

A list of the top 10 movie scenes of 2006

Why: And the award for ?Movie I thought would suck but turned out K? goes to?this. At first glance The Break-Up looks like another mindless romantic comedy but ends up being a surprisingly decent. This scene sums up what the movie does best: tension. As the dinner drags on and each family just weighs on the others nerves Vaughn and Aniston slowly and subtly start digging at one another. Pretty surprising given an actor best known for being one of the friends on.
