Aversion.com | Cinematics – Break EP
aversion.com – Jan 15, 2007
So when Glasgow’s Cinematics make their debut with a post-punk EP somebody at TVT Records is either several steps behind the cutting edge or has a lot of faith that The Cinematics will either move past the funk-punk roots that guide this EP or can hone that style to an edge keen enough to counteract stylistic inertia. The Break EP doesn’t quite prove that it’s a sure bet for The Cinematics to make good on those expectations but it doesn’t wreck the potential to beat the odds on a forthcoming long-player. The quartet’s most at home banging through a highly stylized take throbbing dance-punk that’s as influenced by Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen as modern-day approximations like The Rapture and The Rakes. And even though that means its disco-punk grooves are picked up at the same thrift shop where a dozen or so other fading-star hipster acts frequent Break at least tackles them with an ear to get dance floors hot and sweaty. It’s by-the-numbers disco-punk but it’s also stable enough to heat up a dance floor… The Break EP doesn’t quite prove that it’s a sure bet for The Cinematics to make good on those expectations but it doesn’t wreck the potential to beat the odds on a forthcoming long-player. A cover of Beck’s “Sunday Sun” sounds more influenced by Keane’s arena-rock melodies as post-punk slashing guitars become docile vehicles for faux-arena melodies.

Pats’ celebration draws ire of Tomlinson Chargers
ESPN – Jan 15, 2007
“I would never react in that way. I was very upset” Tomlinson said. “When you go to the middle of our field and start doing the dance. They showed no class and maybe that comes from the head coach… But it was a little finger-pointing and I don’t know where it came from. “It was upsetting to see because they won three Super Bowls” Merriman said according to the Boston Herald. “It’s like a guy on a fast break in basketball and dunking the ball and getting excited. You’ve won three Super Bowls. “When you go to the middle of our field and start doing the dance Shawne Merriman is known for that is disrespectful. They showed no class and maybe that comes from the head coach.

New York Times – Jan 15, 2007
McPherson said he believes that the next season will run for 22 consecutive weeks either in the fall of 2007 or the spring of 2008. Production requirements and scheduling necessities caused ABC to break up the series this season he said. ABC also said it will present a fourth season of “Dancing With the Stars” its hit ballroom-dance competition on Monday nights beginning on March 19. The network decided not to schedule the competition installments of the series directly against “American Idol” which runs on Tuesday nights although the results show for “Dancing” will be seen at 9 p. on Tuesday going up against at least a portion of “Idol” on some nights… McPherson said he believes that the next season will run for 22 consecutive weeks either in the fall of 2007 or the spring of 2008. ‘Violin Dreams’: Chasing Bach’s Elusive Chaconne
NPR – Jan 15, 2007
Written in the early 1700s the Chaconne is the fifth and final movement of Bach’s Partita No. Each section is based on a dance: the Allemande Courante Sarabande Gigue and then the Chaconne which is longer than all four movements that precede it combined. As the story goes Bach wrote it in memory of his first wife after he returned from a trip to discover that she had died. Steinhardt recorded a new version of the Chaconne last year. It is included with Violin Dreams his new book about performing — solo and with his longtime group the Guarneri String Quartet — and in particular about his relationship with the Bach Chaconne. Steinhardt first heard the Chaconne performed when he was an 11-year-old violinist.

‘Wake-ing Charles’ set-up for Hyatt
Jamaica Gleaner – Jan 15, 2007
on Saturday the singing drumming and dancing became calm in the National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) parking lot outside the Little Little Theatre Tom Redcam Avenue St. It was a rare break in ‘Wake-ing Charles Hyatt’ which had started about two hours earlier with a large gathering and which was the precursor to his funeral service later on Saturday. “Say set-up!” The leader of the sometimes raucous but certainly enthusiastic chorale said and a chorus of ‘set-up!’ echoed his amplified voice. “This is the serious segment. This is the final travelling… But the circle empty. We cyaan continue until de circle full. If yu a dance or a learn fe dance” whosoever will may come” he said. And as the kumina drumming started a few did ‘come’ from the ring of chairs around the dancers to join the dancing smiling figures a man spraying three bursts of rum from his mouth to form a thick mist that hung for a split second in the calm night air. Somewhat prophetic”Moon a shine oh moon a shine” the leader set off in the final set-up phase although the following ‘rain a fall’ would prove somewhat prophetic. “Weed an grabber” were not to be left out then the leader bawled for silence to announce the formation of a train. “We going go roun’ de back an go back right yasso” he said.

Funkagenda Interview » DJ Dance Music News Dance Music Reviews Dance…
Dance Nova – Jan 15, 2007
That was amazing!Funkagendaver the last year you have had a lot of success with your production work. Do you think all DJ’s should be producing? Anyone serious about their music and becoming a permanent fixture on the house scene should seriously consider trying it as it’s a great way of expressing your own personal style. Chad LewisWhat do you think of the state of the UK dance scene right now? There have been a lot of changes in 2006 and whilst the music scene has enjoyed a great year I feel that the clubbing scene could do with pushing forward more musically as a lot of the places we go to the people seem to be stuck in a time warp!FunkagendaMoving away from your own production what artists feature in your DJ sets at the moment? What labels and artists are doing it for you right now?Well my favorite producer of late has to be Dave Spoon. He seems to get away with straggling between house and techno with a massive slab of groove to polish it off! Also Mark Knight MTV Ame and Dennis Ferrer have been on fire recently. Aside from Groove I play pretty much all of Toolroom’s releases and have just found a great new label called ‘Shove’. The first two tracks from them are permanent fixtures in my bag. Chad LewisWhat Dj’s would you like to produce for and what DJ’s would you like to play with?I enjoy producing for anyone really as it’s a chance to put my spin on things… Chad LewisWhat Dj’s would you like to produce for and what DJ’s would you like to play with?I enjoy producing for anyone really as it’s a chance to put my spin on things. Amongst my favorite DJs are Carl Cox + James Zabiela but that is to name but a few!FunkagendaWhat has been your greatest achievement and your favorite gig?Always two really difficult questions! I am still aiming for my greatest achievement so I will tell you when I am done! As far as fave gigs anything in Eastern Europe tends to be a blast! They really know how to party…Chad LewisWhat would you be doing if you weren’t a DJ? I love all aspects of the industry so I guess I would be doing something in the same area I already promote the GD brand full time as well as club tours and production so I guess I would be busy in one way or another. Funkagenda and Chad LewisFinally then what does the future hold for you and Groovedigital? We will continue to push and break through new artists as well as staying true to our roots musically. You can expect a great year from Groove and release wise there are some crackers on the way! We will also be promoting the brand and touring worldwide. Groovedigital’s latest release Funkagenda presents TIKK TAKK  . ‘good to me’ with remixes from Chad Lewis Kim Fai Rogue DJ’s remix’s in the shops this week.
