When did hate take over sports?
ESPN – Jan 19, 2007
Every time they showed him on the sidelines I kept expecting Harold Ramis and Bill Murray to be staring up at him in horror. • I can’t believe that (A) the Colts won in Baltimore without ever crossing the 15-yard-line (B) that Steve McNair couldn’t even give the Ravens a “D-plus” in that game and (C) if they were playing that game again this Sunday I’d absolutely pick the Ravens again. They needed one break in that game and just couldn’t get it. You know it’s a shaky win on the road when your two offensive MVPs are your kicker and the other team’s middle linebacker (who tipped two INTs away). My fault for taking McNair. Gotta stick to your guns. • I can’t believe how well New Hampshire reader Tony Westover summed up my feelings on that whining nickname-stealer LaDainian Tomlinson: “I can understand why LT thought it was disrespectful and unclassy that the Patriots started ‘doing the dance Shawne Merriman is known for… Tom Brady doesn’t have a dance because he’s a class act and doesn’t do steroids. • I can’t believe how much I enjoyed these other three e-mails:New Jersey’s Gary Saldutti: “Andy Reid’s time-management skills are so pathetic that if he was the ball dropper in Times Square on New Years Eve I’m convinced the ball would hit at about 12:03 a. Nashua’s Todd Sullivan: “Marty’s challenge of Brown’s strip reminded me of Demi Moore’s ‘I strenuously object’ scene in ‘A Few Good Men.
Pinal County prohibition on outdoor dancing is as ridiculous as it is…
East Valley Tribune – Jan 19, 2007
The outdoor patio has enough space for guys to give their gals a twirl but Bell never made dancing part of his business plan. County officials say San Tan Flat was transformed into an illegal house of boogie when some customers started to feel the rhythm anyway. utdoor dance halls are banned in Pinal County after all. Bell has posted signs that say “No Dancing” but that’s not enough to satisfy the hall monitors. “Even if this was not a law which it is I’m afraid I would have a lot of difficulty endorsing an enterprise which is as fraught with genuine peril as I believe this one to be. ” Actually Pinal County hasn’t shown how this impromptu boot scootin’ poses any sort of threat to the public health or safety which should be the only reason for browbeating San Tan Flat. What’s next county planners writing out dancing tickets at the upcoming Country Thunder music concert? Dance police roaming backyards to put a stop to any dos-ados at graduation parties and wedding receptions? Bell isn’t walking off the dance floor just yet… The Institute for Justice a public interest law firm appears ready to step in and ask an independent judge to stop the county’s hidebound obsession with the rulebook instead of looking out for the people it is supposed to serve. We expect the judge’s score card will rate the county with a big fat zero. Meanwhile somebody should check to see if Kevin Bacon is ready to break out his rebellious footloose shoes again. “There was a time for this law but not anymore. This is our time to dance. The Family Filmgoer
Washington Post – Jan 19, 2007
The bad-guy elf looks like a weird skeleton-grasshopper hybrid and could briefly creep out some younger kids. There are themes about a boy who feels abandoned by his busy parents and an anguished grandmother worried when he goes missing. Arthur (wonderful Freddie Highmore) is spending summer break with Granny (Mia Farrow) on her farm because his parents are off looking for jobs. Granny tells Arthur stories about his brilliant grandfather an inventor in Africa. He also learns of the tiny elf people the Minimoys whom his grandfather met there. When Arthur finds out that his grandmother is about to lose her farm to a nasty developer he discovers his grandfather’s instructions on how to enter the Minimoys’ world. They seem to live beneath Granny’s garden now and it’s there Arthur might find the rubies his grandfather buried which could save the farm… Little kids may jump at the dinosaur chasing Stiller or the Huns grabbing him; toilet humor; rude expressions. PG-13s"Stomp the Yard. " Cliched college saga uplifted by exuberant dancing: A Los Angeles inner-city teenager and ace street dancer (Columbus Short) loses his brother in a brawl and is sent still grieving to live with relatives in Atlanta; he enters a historically black university and works part time for his uncle (Harry J. Lennix) the school’s groundskeeper; snobby students look down on him; he enters the fraternities’ big "stepping" competition (a synchronized dance style inspired by African gumboot dancing) and aims to impress a girl (Meagan Good) overcome the dislike of her dad (Allan Louis) and win her from an arrogant boyfriend (Darrin Henson). Fatal shooting; midrange profanity; racial slurs; implied overnight tryst between college students suggestive dancing by girls rapper-style crotch-grabbing by guys shots of young women’s jeans-clad behinds. Too much swearing macho posturing for middle schoolers. "Freedom Writers.
Club gives its first concert of the year
Northern Times – Jan 19, 2007
This was followed by a few Gaelic songs from Mairi Munro after which it was the turn of the chanter players Harry and Jack Ross form Rogart Johanna Mearns and Luis Howell. To finish that part of the programme all the musicians played Mairi’s Wedding a great credit to the tutors involved who have helped all these budding musicians from scratch. After a break for tea and the raffle the Rogart Ceilidh Band played for a dance. This is an up and coming dance band formed by some of the members of the Sutherland Accordion and Fiddle Club. They have been going for two and a half years and received much encouragement from veteran Rogart player Bert Sutherland to get them started. Players on stage were Monica MacLean on accordion who does a lot of good work in the area helping youngsters and adults to play and encouraging them to get enjoyment from it; Iain Bain from Alness who took an old accordion down from his attic about four years ago and assisted by Monica has come on in leaps and bounds ever since; John Grant from Golspie on drums a former member of the late Hector Macrae’s Dance Band from the Brora area; and Ken Black from Brora on keyboards a former music teacher who retired to Sutherland and has given much of his musical talents to the county including being the current conductor of Lairg Gaelic Choir. The group play at regular Friday night Scottish dancing classes in Rogart and they have played at the Ardgay and Inver Christmas Scottish Country Dancing Rallies.
Heart Breaker
Screen Weekly – Jan 19, 2007
js’> Will this award translate into smarter career moves better deals and never-to-break resolutions? This is my first Screen Award. And it is a very big award for me. Being the first award show of the year and a jury award at that Screen’s always been held in high esteem. Deep down I think I always knew that it was very fair but earlier I’d always missed out narrowly in the final verdict. And in my disappointment I would grouse that Screen biased hai and I was never going to win… Now I can work towards doing better films. If mkara was all about performance then your ‘item’ number in Don was all about song dance and glamour. Yeah and though I just love to sing and dance that did not make ‘Yeh mera dil. ‘ any easier because I knew all along that I was going to be compared to Helen aunty who was always going to rate better because she’s always been the epitome of style grace and glamour. Eventually Farhan (director Farhan Akhtar) resolved the conflict for me by pointing out that rather than copy Helen aunty I should do the number in the trademark Kareena Kapoor style.
Accustomed to flight girl will float
St. Petersburg Times – Jan 19, 2007
The family marks the days that pass on the calendar counting down to dad's return in February. Since he was away for Christmas dad bought toys where he was stationed and shipped them to the kids' grandmother's house as surprises for Christmas morning. Annamarie is waiting for her dad to return to break in her new Dance Dance Revolution video game. Annamarie's 6-year-old brother Austin likes calling himself the man of the house. Annamarie has taken on her dad's chores like cleaning the dishes helping mop and – eeeew she said – cleaning toilets. Her mom works as a medical assistant at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute and is studying to be a nurse commuting to Kaiser University in Lakeland.
