Good foot: Black ballet at the Royal pera House
Independent – Jan 30, 2007
But the Arts Council has deemed the company ineligible for funding. “They feel they have funded enough classical ballet. There’s such a small pot for dance anyway and everybody wants it. “The company’s lucky break came in 2002 when Pancho attended a talk at the Royal pera House’s Linbury Studio about the lack of black artists in ballet and opera as part of Black History Month. There she met the chair of the panel Bonnie Greer who set up a meeting between Pancho and Deborah Bull the former principal dancer and creative director of RH2. Bull offered Ballet Black the use of dance studios at Covent Garden and threw in a bag of her old pointe shoes for good measure. ver time the unofficial helping hand became official sponsorship and in November 2005 Ballet Black performed a triple bill of works by Antonia Franceschi Stephen Sheriff and Irek Mukhamedov whose work Duael Fuel was inspired by the music of Duke Ellington at the Linbury.

Gift of the Gubba…but is Tony skating on thin ice with his poetry…

A succulent satsuma waiting to be squeezed? Note the alliteration. We’retalking nothing short of improvised poetry here. That said who squeezes asatsuma? Peel one maybe or break it into segments. But squeeze it? In myexperience that’s courting disaster fruit-wise. Gubba was even wilder about the dress chosen by Kristina Lenko one of theprofessional partners. A novel use for BacoFoil and tooth floss Kristina’scostume was one could hardly help noticing only minimally bigger thanKristina. “It’s like an extra skin of gold leaf” Gubba explained… ” How the years fell away. There hasn’t been a line like that onSaturday night television since Bob Monkhouse was in his light entertainmentheyday. Meanwhile Kyran Bracken sport’s best bet for pro-celebrity ice-dance gloryin 2007 appears worryingly (and somewhat belatedly) to be suffering acrisis of modesty and is saying that he dances “like an ape in a tightsuit”. He has also discovered that when he extends his leg out behind himhis eyebrows go up. Could that have anything to do with the tight suit?According to Robin Cousins though the rugby union man is “the best technicalskater we have in this competition”. That’s no mean accolade in a field thatalso includes Ulrika Jonsson Duncan James from Blue and at least one formermember of Boyzone. However the survival against the odds of the stricken Burley this time aroundsuggested that the phone voters don’t give (as we say in ice dancing) aflying big one for technique and are more interested in how badly bruisedthe dancers were in the week leading up to the competition.

Swing dancing: an art more fun than one would expect
SMC Collegian – Jan 30, 2007
Don’t get me wrong; in the right social context I am a regular dance-party animal and more than once have been known to shake my groove-thang. I just lack the creativity and overall skill to do it like Jessica Alba. That is why swing dancing is so awesome. Should I be deprived of the joys of dance simply on account of my inability to break it down like Pulses? I recently attended a swing dance complete with a lesson. It was here that I was taught the foundation of all my swing to come-the rock step. This most basic swing movement consists of stepping back on the right foot forward on the left then a quick transfer of weight from the right foot to the left again. After this I’m golden.

Ballet Magazine – Jan 30, 2007
Two dates were arranged at the historic Teatro Salieri in Legnano on Thurs 25th Jan followed by a performance at the modern Teatro Rossini in the seaside resort of Civitanova Marche on Sat 27th Jan. Conveniently ‘Ryan Air’ flies out to Ancona just 20 minutes from Civitanova so we treated ourselves to a week-end away from grey gloomy Blighty and headed south to enjoy the sparkling blue skies of the Adriatic coast. Civitanova Marche is a modern town and has a bustling leather goods market held in the central Piazza it’s ‘shoe heaven’ on a Saturday morning and would have kept Imelda Marcos happy for hours without a doubt! A walk around the town lead to another discovery Via Enrico Ceccheti! Ceccheti (1850-1928) founder of one of the most influential methods of ballet instruction in the 20th century had a house here in Civitanova which might explain the emphasis on dance in this town and the prominent dance season held here every winter… Civitanova Marche is a modern town and has a bustling leather goods market held in the central Piazza it’s ‘shoe heaven’ on a Saturday morning and would have kept Imelda Marcos happy for hours without a doubt! Clap Your Hands to this album
UM Maneater – Jan 30, 2007
In spite of being a simple acoustic-guitars-and-keyboards track the song is one of the album’s strongest. The vocals here are a lot of fun and the “la la la” refrain and call and response throughout make it fun to sing along to. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah makes attempts at new sounds as well including carnival-style orchestral arrangements on the instrumental “Upon Encountering the Crippled Elephant” and electronic-dance pop on “Satan Said Dance” which is potentially one of the year’s great indie-kid dance party tracks. The one flagrant shortcoming of Some Loud Thunder ? perhaps an expected one considering the band’s eclectic style ? is its disjointedness. In spite of some shining early moments the album doesn’t really gain momentum until the last third. unsworth and company break out the big guns an arsenal of soulful bitterness and barrages of well-placed influences and new sounds that break through the ready-to-attack frontlines of media hype and accusations of a “sophomore slump. Each of the final four tracks has an entirely different feel but all seem to complement one another well and finish out the album strong… The one flagrant shortcoming of Some Loud Thunder ? perhaps an expected one considering the band’s eclectic style ? is its disjointedness. Each of the final four tracks has an entirely different feel but all seem to complement one another well and finish out the album strong. The acoustic “Arm and Hammer” jumps from haunting sparse plucking to bouncy jangle pop. It is complemented by unsworth’s delightfully unsettling wailing and yelping leading the track to sound like something from a bizarre love child of Nick Drake and Violent Femmes lead singer Gordon Gano. The jarring guitar stabs and epic desperation of “Yankee Go Home” make it the surprise political anthem of the year.

My doll myself

In the last Halloween parade here in the City there were groups of people dressed as Zombies who would suddenly break into the Thriller dance. I can definitely see this integrated into the traditional American wedding dance set along with the Chicken Dance and the Electric Slide.
