A white man’s look at race and the hip-hop industry
San Francisco Chronicle – Feb 25, 2007
The only recurring shortcoming of Tanz’s book is that the author behaves as though Jay-Z’s latest dalliance with corporate culture never happened. He’s very good on break dancing analyzing the iconic movies “Flashdance” “Beat Street” and “Breakin’ ” in one piece keeping the essay from turning into what might otherwise have been like a glossy magazine profile of a poignantly marginal break-dance crew. The juxtaposition between those box-office successes and the street culture that spawned them says loads about the corporate media’s complicated relationship to hip-hop. Yet we’re also taken on a tour of New York’s hip-hop historical spots and uneasily reminded that hip-hop couldn’t wait to sell out. Tanz is all torn up about this quest for lucre and he looks for redemption or at least the assurance that some critic’s not going to call him a “cracker” when his book comes out. His is a thoughtful surprisingly un-bummeristic journey full of fake Canuck G’s Eminem “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” Wisconsin “churban” radio station programmers Caucasian homeys who rhyme about computer code Three 6 Mafia at the scars and the always-available Bill Adler.

Fired up on a welcome night off
Boston Globe – Feb 25, 2007
The mix of entertainment “puts the flavor in it” said Davis. “It’s not just strictly dancing and music. The comedian and the group break up the monotony of just having a dance party. Sometimes you want to just hear something and be entertained and not just wear yourself out dancing. So I think the mix was good. In December Bradley and Jacks recruited fellow firefighters Leroy Heyward from Ladder 21 Anthony Hinds from Ladder 21 Larry Hurd from Engine 32 Gino Roach from Ladder 26 and Clydies Freeman from Ladder 21. The 9 Alarm team was formed.

The Bulls might not have taken the Eagles by surprise but certainly took them out of their comfort zone by giving them something other than a zone. “We watched a lot of film and we saw that they are a team that likes to fast break but we got our hands up to stop the (outlet) passes and our guards got back” said Morgan Livermore who shared the credit for shutting down the Rowland brothers with Xander McNally. “We stopped the break and when you slow them down they are not as good they can be. I think their league is mostly zone and we came at them with our tough man-to-man and they didn’t handle it. I don’t think they were used to seeing man to-man like that. Honick always uses man-to-man and it is his responsibility to find the favorable matchups which meant Xander McNally on Robby Rowland and his center Livermore on Rich Rowland a wing who spends much of his time on the perimeter. “The thing a lot of people don’t know about Morgan is he is a pretty good perimeter defender” Honick explained of the non-traditional matchup… Lawson responded with a 3 of his own but McGuigan answered him right back with a 3-pointer 15 seconds later to make the lead 12-7 with 2:30 remaining and start the 22-0 run that lasted into the third quarter. “I usually go in on zone because I’m one of the shooters and that’s what I was asked to do tonight” said McGuigan who was rather blas? about his 13-point effort in an NCS game. “I’m supposed to come in and try to break the zone. Livermore also fulfilled his role well working inside and running the floor for a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Xander McNally like McGuigan was nonchalant about his production which had him on pave for a quadruple double with four points five rebounds four assists and five steals at the half. “That comes naturally to me” Xander McNally said. I try to supply the energy for other people.

n the move with Jorma Elo
Boston Globe – Feb 25, 2007
“I don’t know what it is with dancers. “At 45 Elo remains at his dancing weight just under 160 pounds. His short mussed-on-the-top brown hair is graying at the temples. In person he’s gentle and modest. ver a recent dinner at McCormick & Schmick’s in the Park Plaza Elo spoke quietly of his work letting his fettuccini get cold and declining several offers by a waitress to put it back in the oven. There were rehearsals in Boston in August November and January he says… I’m just hoping this lasts as long as it’s interesting to me. “Facing the musicality Last Wednesday Elo gathered a couple of dozen Boston Ballet dancers together to work on “Brake the Eyes. ” (The title is a play on words from “break the ice. “) For the rehearsal Elo wore blue sweatpants a T-shirt and socks. nce the dancers began to move the results had all the hallmarks of Elo’s choreography: Traditional jumps and turns mixed with undulating hips windmilling arms and jerking thrusting moves more likely to be seen in a modern dance piece. Elo watched as Larissa Ponomarenko and Sabi Varga performed a short duet. As Ponomarenko retreated across the dance floor she twisted an arm in the air.

Big Dance will lack local flavor yet again
Augusta Chronicle – Feb 25, 2007
- Barring any conference tournament miracles it’s time to brace ourselves for the reality of another NCAA Tournament without anything to root for. ” ver an excruciating span of 3:41 in a hostile new building on Saturday however that glimmer of hope came close to evaporating. After a stirring comeback had the Yellow Jackets poised to win their sixth game in the past seven Virginia did what it did to Clemson a month ago and hogged all of the final points as it rallied from a seven-point deficit to win 75-69. Suddenly a young Georgia Tech team that might have needed only one win in two attempts on a home court where it feels most comfortable is in need of a sweep against two of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s toughest teams (North Carolina and Boston College) to secure an NCAA bid. Georgia Tech’s Anthony Morrow described the road ahead as “fighting for our lives… That could be said for every one of our favorite college programs. And it’s a sad state considering the promise that everyone showed as the calendar switched over to 2007. Georgia Tech had two young superstars in need of a little seasoning to break out. Georgia was a couple of healthy bodies away from burying the burden of sanctions left behind by Jim Harrick. Clemson was the last unbeaten team in the nation seemingly destined to end a streak of seven years out of the NCAA Tournament spotlight. And South Carolina was 10-2 and hopeful that the lessons from a pair of NIT championships might blossom into something better this year. Now with March closing hard all the promise has faded into something on the darker side of the NCAA bubble.
