"He surrounded himself with a really strong disciplined staff and the results were there to see" Cullen said. So when Brett Seymour and Neville Costigan were involved in alcohol-related incidents part way through the season he sacked them. To counter late-season slumps the Broncos gambled on a mid-season break. Although Bennett had anticipated even planned for a drop in form following the break the Broncos suffered five straight losses and again the whispers began. Inside though what nobody could see happening was the coaching. Bennett had seen something in the Melbourne defeat – the fifth loss – so when the accusations of a slump began his reply was sharp and short. "Your definition of a slump and mine are different" he said… Here was what people didn’t see. It makes you feel good to be around. ” Travolta has been charming audiences since he sprang to fame playing pretty-but-dumb student Vinnie Barbarino in television series Welcome Back Kotter in 1975. But it was his role as dance floor pin-up Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever a film that effectively melded the disco craze with the social chasms of the day that set him on a course for Hollywood stardom. It is the film’s 30th anniversary this year — something Travolta whose performance saw him nominated for the best actor scar in 1978 says he plans to celebrate. “It changed the world and it is important to acknowledge that. And there was enormous change in my life too” he says. “I felt like that was the blueprint for the rest of my career for sure and I don’t think I would be here today if it weren’t for Saturday Night Fever… ” Travolta’s next role is definitely a change. He pulls on a fat suit to play musical big momma Edna Turnblad in a remake of comic songfest Hairspray. “I dance a lot in Hairspray and while she’s very big I play her as though she’s 120 pounds (54kg). In her mind she’s light” he says. “I played her that way because I thought it was funnier. “I thought it was more naive and more feminine to play her with an illusion of that. ” Wild Hogs is now showing.
