The defending ice dancing champions Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski of Bulgaria edged narrowly ahead of Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon of Canada after the original dance event. The top three pairs from the championships last year are in the same position heading into the free dance Friday. This time though they are separated by a half-point.
