Toronto’s Christopher House gets into high-concept video games

inc–>Toronto’s Christopher House gets into high-concept video gamesVICTR SWBDAFreelancePublished: Saturday March 31 2007Timecode Break Christopher House’s ambitious hour-long mix of video and live dance earned some impressive critical compliments after its premiere at the Canada Dance Festival in ttawa last year. When the Danse Danse series brings the work to Centre Pierre Peladeau in mid-April Montrealers will see what House and his Toronto Dance Theatre have been up to since they performed his delightfully witty Persephone’s Lunch here five years ago. Persephone’s Lunch was inspired by Homer’s The dyssey and its quick-witted hero Ulysses which partly explains why cleverness was essential to the choreographer’s approach. Timecode Break also takes viewers on an odyssey but it’s a journey of another kind. Its map is delineated by time and memory two abstract notions that many contemporary dance choreographers seem to want to put into concrete form (a brilliant example seen in ttawa three weeks ago was William Forsythe’s 7 to 10 Passages).

Women’s Final Four: Tar Heels must dance or face the music
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Mar 31, 2007
Latta was 1 for 10 from 3-point range. True Baylor and Maryland which North Carolina had beaten by double digits three weeks earlier in the ACC tournament won the national title but neither was as talented as the Tar Heels and both years the Tar Heels left us with that “what-could-have-been” feeling. And while people respect the Tar Heels the knock on them has been they tend to lose focus lack a killer instinct and break down into a group of individuals when adversity strikes. We have seen evidence that perhaps this team is different — it rallied from a halftime deficit to beat N. State in the ACC championship and battled back from a large second-half deficit to beat Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA tournament — but until they win it all.

It takes a good toe to tango
Wanganui Chronicle – Mar 31, 2007
” The doctors have told me I shouldn’t attempt any activity on my right foot for three to four weeks. “If I attempt anything I am going to be n significant pain. The issues now are do I break the pain barrier and dance and can I even get on my shoes. “If I was dancing for myself I would say how unfortunate and that would be the end of it but I am dancing for Wanganui and the Cancer Society. It is a significant dilemma and I will make a decision on Monday. The show’s executive producer Deb Kelleher has said TVNZ will go with what ever decision I come up with. ” Mr Laws said he was barefoot in the semi-dark studio and having opened the door was moving to the other side of the room to put on his dance shoes when he tripped on slats.

A world of wonder from Les Ballets
Boston Globe – Mar 31, 2007
Barton’s alarmingly original voice resounds with a thwack. In squares of light the 12 dancers — the women in corsets and slips the men in street clothes — globetrot through a confluence of styles: American breakdancing begets Irish stepdancing begets contortions that read as foibles interrupting a pure classical line. Barton can break the rules of ballet because she knows them so well. Hers is a choreography of nuance: Heads peck like chicken beaks hands rake the air like claws lusty arcs hinge to the floor. Lips smack and teeth bite fingers snap and grab at the dancers’ own crotches. These bodies contort and flail as they attempt to converse with one another. Near-kisses become near-misses in yearnings for human connection… The piece is obsessed with the theme of replacements — one partner replaces another a trio replaces a duet a pelvic thrust replaces a parallel-passe spin an orange leotard replaces loose checked pants. There’s a sense of minimalist thrumming to this trip as the 12 dancers dissolve and regroup in myriad permutations. The dance is buoyant and full of fun. But its seemingly limitless meanderings become a bit tiresome by the work’s close.

Hooping works the core muscles – emphasizing the abdominals. The two-pound hoop also aids in balance and flexibility (that is if you can avoid flinging it across the room). It’s low-impact but you’ll definitely break a sweat. Classes are casual enough that footwear isn’t required. n top of the physical workout the rhythm is meditative and soothing. It’s hoopnotic get it?Each time a new trick is introduced four women in the class try it with good humor. Nobody gets it on the first try… Sabine Sato of Laguna Beach decided to give hoops a try after seeing the hoop dancers in concert. In just her third class Sato gracefully twirls the hoop over her head and back down around her waist. “This is a beautiful combination between cardio and dance” said Sato 38. “It’s not just for youngsters. ”Sue Bamford of West Los Angeles and Gloria Aragon of Artesia say they’re taking the classes together to get in shape and lose weight. Neither woman hooped much as a child. “If you like dancing it’s really fun” Bamford said.
