Breaking out on Break
Sierra Sun – Apr 11, 2007
April is Alcohol Awareness month which has been observed as a national campaign since 1987 and is supported by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. This year the campaign’s message is directed toward teens. “At almost every high school dance we invariably have at least one person who shows up with alcohol in their system” said Truckee Police fficer Bryan Berry who also serves as the school resources officer for all Truckee schools. In response to a March high school dance that got a little out of hand the Truckee High leadership class organized “Students Against Drunk Dancing” with the main focus on teen sobriety and having fun said Truckee High Vice Principal Grant Steunenberg. Students were offered a dollar off their admission ticket if they signed a paper stating they would not attend the dance under the influence of drugs or alcohol he said. Last Friday’s dance attracted about 200 students a lesser turnout compared to some school dances but Steunenberg used the dance as an opportunity to reach out to students. “I had a conversation with just about every kid” said Steunenberg.

Worcester Comprehensive Child Care Services received some good news recently. The nonprofit Break the Cycle of Poverty awarded the agency $70000 to continue the summer component of its Teen Care program through 2009. Break the Cycle of Poverty has funded the Teen Care program through the summer months since its initial donation of $60000 in 2004. Break the Cycle of Poverty got involved after Worcester Comprehensive Child Care Services officials worriedly noticed a significant drop-off in their academic year programs at South and Burncoat High schools because of a lack of continuity over the summer. Teen Care provides services for teen parents and their children including health monitoring counseling and nutrition education. “This new round of funding will continue a vital benefit for vulnerable teens and their children” said John Gardiner WCCS’s executive director.

As he stood in the final two – the dancers with the lowestcombined judges’ score and viewer votes – with singer KateCeberano Graham cracked: “There’s no way I can let Kate go she’sa much better dancer than me so I have to withdraw. Liu’s unassuming style is perhaps the result of having been raised with her elder sister and young brother in the small town of Prince Rupert British Columbia Canada. She had a regular childhood. While she loved to dance she never harboured dreams of performing. Instead when she was growing up she envisioned that she would be working in some big corporation and at the age of 24 starting a family. Liu was already on her way to realising her vision. She was a third year student at University of British Columbia (UBC). But her plans went awry when she enterted the Miss Chinese Vancouver pageant… ” Together with her dad Liu packed up and headed for Hong Kong. Her first appearance was in the popular serial Golden Faith where she had a minor role. In 2002 she landed her big break playing princess Sam Tim in the period sitcom Virtues of Harmony. She made such an impression that viewers nicknamed her “Princess”. More roles followed despite the fact that she can’t read Chinese relying on pinyin with her father’s help. She has completed filming The Entire City Dances a series about a group of young people and their passion for dance. With her dancing background she’s been dancing since she was four the show is a must-watch for fans.
