So You Think You Can Dance: New York Auditions (season premiere)
TV Squad – May 25, 2007
And Dan Karaty is along as the third judge in the opening round. They had quite a turnout with performers from a variety of disciplines with a wide array of abilities. Let’s break the episode down in three parts The Good The Bad and The Ugly. The GoodWith 59 people getting tickets to the next round in Las Vegas there were certainly some good performances to be had. There were also some good personal stories to go along with it. I think my favorite of those was Heather Zampier. Coming back from two hip surgeries to fix a bone spur the tattooed Heather is easy to root for… She didn’t get a ticket to the next round right away but was invited back for the choreography segment of the audition. There she passed and will be moving on. It was a close call trying to decide what was my favorite dance performance of the night. In the end I’m giving the nod to Faina Savich. Her brother Stanislav from season two was on hand to dance with her and they put on quite a show. Faina has the total package and could be an early contender. Also in the running for best of the night were Pasha Kovalev and Anya Farnis.

Loyal “Dancing” fans know the finale is won or lost during the final freestyle round and all three dancers earn perfect scores but some are better than others. Laila’s Fly Girl-inspired routine is lacking — the judges are right when they tell her she should stick to showing off her elegance and sensuality. Joey’s lively dance is full of flips and tricks — a real winner. But Apolo’s breakdance skills are awesome and his routine is the true crowd-pleaser. Apolo deserves the disco ball trophy especially since Tuesday he also celebrated his 25th birthday. Julianne is equally impressive — at 19 she’s the youngest professional dancer to win the ABC show.

I feel honored and happy. The triple-threat whose Broadway work includes several turns as merry murderess Roxie Hart in the long-running revival of Chicago said that her current job is especially enjoyable because “it’s about dance and that’s what I love and [have] been doing my whole life. Being able to sing and dance and act in a great show in a great role is the most rewarding. I feel very proud of the show and what it says about dancers. ” That said d’Amboise admits that Cassie the role created in the original Broadway staging by Donna McKechnie is the most demanding part she’s ever played: “It’s the hardest show I’ve ever done in my life… Mary Poppins is a change for the actress in several ways: Unlike the revivals of The Sound of Music and The Music Man Luker is a featured player rather than the one who has to carry the show and Poppins also allows the gifted singer to move out of her soprano tones and display her rich alto. Both changes are fine by Luker: “I like being the featured person that comes on every now and then and hopefully makes a bit of an impact and then goes back to my room to needlepoint. That for me is a change and sort of a nice break. [and] I’m actually belting a little in the show which is very very different for me.

Then I had them again in seventh and eighth grade. I went to their graduation and eighth grade dance. They are truly special young women and will make a difference in this world. Q: How long did it take you to write Warrior's Daughter?A: Three years. It was three times longer than it is now packed with too many details too many characters too many events. I cut a lot out of the story.
