Hot fun in the summertime with ‘Top Chef’ ‘Dance’
San Diego Union Tribune – Jun 29, 2007
” Masochists need getaways too!If you are more of a shuffleboard and chocolate-fountain person try NBC's “America's Got Talent” and A&E's “Confessions of a Matchmaker” which will give you all of the wacky entertainment and awkward socializing of a cruise without the pesky seasickness. But if your ideal summer distraction involves kicking back with a cold one while other people do the heavy lifting you can't beat “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Top Chef” where industrious people knock themselves out for your slacker enjoyment. Now in their third seasons Fox's dance contest and Bravo's cooking competition would be great TV at any time of the year. But in these days of reruns (Who is watching “CSI: Miami” again and why?) and oddities (“Pirate Master” anyone? Anyone?) their blend of reality-TV drama and old-fashioned talent make them as welcome as the ice cream man. Everything is cooler when they're around… There are no bleeped-out bad words on “So You Think You Can Dance. ” There is no time for back stabbing and no reason to plot. The contestants just grab their dance partners hunker down with the choreographers and emerge each week with moves that will slay you and a collective determination that will break your heart. As the judges have explained (at length) “So You Think You Can Dance” is about more than dancing. It is also about growing. The judges and the voting audience love a scrumptious Viennese Waltz but what they really love is a Viennese Waltz performed by a hip-hop girl who has never danced in high heels in her entire life. They love ballroom dancers who conquer abstract contemporary routines and modern dancers who can make a salsa sizzle.

I spoke with Lucy McLemore who with her husband Doug owns Dance Gallery 2 where Dominic 21 has honed his skills the past four years. She and “Dom” as she calls him have been e-mailing since he’s been in L. for the show and he told her he would be flying back north today to “surprise” his fellow students who are rehearsing like crazy for the school’s big dance program tonight and Saturday at Mesa Verde High School.
