Dancing with bare feet
Jamaica Gleaner – Jul 20, 2007
” I was confused I was not executing the ‘dutty wine’ just a regular one. “It is against regulations to take off your shoes on the dance floor. “Enforcing the ruleI attempted to argue but that made no difference someone had made a rule and this employee who was possibly on dance floor patrol could not break it he not did even seem to want to so that I could gyrate morefreely. So as not to have my spirits quashed I did what any party girl would do got a drink. The bar looked like a scene from the immigration hall. People in a neat line waiting patiently there was about three feet between the bar and the first person in line as if there was an invisible yellow line that we were all waiting behind.

“The Producers” feels strained and unsure compared to this happy spectacle. “Rent” is a little sluggish. “Dreamgirls” almost seems ashamed of its pedigree — it takes so long to break into song that you practically forget it’s an honest-to-goodness musical. “The Phantom of the pera” is ornate yet hollow very rarely living up to the emotional allure of the genre. Even the much-vaunted “Chicago” which supposedly heralded the return of the movie musical and attracted crowds who previously.

Who? I was wondering how they were going to pull out an hour show but who is this guy? Well he is last week’s guest judge Debbie Allen’s cousin as well as one fabulous tap dancer. Cat also informs us that they don’t do tap on the show because it is so difficult. Like break dancing leapsetc. are easy! Come on now!Anya was the first dancer to dance tonight and once again she danced a ballroom solo to “Proud Mary”. It was fun and lively. Danny danced to a Brian McKnight song and he was amazing. That boy can leap! Jamie danced a comtemporary that had some amazing jumps in it.
Govinda the Indian idol
Times of India – Jul 20, 2007
Pujakick-started the show with a superb performance and everyone followed it up withtheir best too. Chang once again proved his mettle. But it was Emon whodominated the show with his spirited performance which had even Anu Malekacknowledging it with his trademark poetry! But the two people who stole theshow were once again Amit Paul with his heartrending Why did you break myheart? and Tum kya jaano mohabbat kya hai. If Amit broughtthe house down with his singing Ankita burnt the dance floor with Govinda tothe tune of Babuji dheere chalna and Babuji zara dheere chalo. The ace performerthat Ankita is she managed to entice Govinda to dance with her. Together theywere a riot! Not to be left out of all the song and dance Anu Malek and Alishajoined the gang on stage to bring down the curtains on a delightful evening. Govinda’s presence seemed to have brought out the best in everybody.

Purna Chandra Majhi and Manikuntala Bhowmick provided duet vocals with flute by Kiran Kumar and sitar by Yar Mohammad. With Diwan Singh on the tanpura the team was teeming with Gandharva Mahavidyalaya stalwarts. Dance performances accompanied by them usually gain in stature and excellence due to their immense contribution. This time however some inexplicably off pitch notes lessened the listening pleasure. ff-notes were not the only surprise. To have the dancer’s biodata read out for a second time – complete with extracts from press comments – while she changed costumes seemed an imposition. To attempt to boost the image of a highly competent artiste with words weakens the effect… To have the dancer’s biodata read out for a second time – complete with extracts from press comments – while she changed costumes seemed an imposition. To attempt to boost the image of a highly competent artiste with words weakens the effect. It would have been far better to fill the time needed to change costume with some music a more enlightening announcement or just a plain break – like in many traditional towns where the interval is an inextricable part of the cultural experience.
ur World: Under the layers
Naples Daily News – Naples Daily News – Jul 20, 2007
“Sure you can or if this isn’t your style you can find something that works for you” says Laurie Carty a 25-year veteran in the world of exotic dance. Ten women listen on a recent evening at Sway Lounge in East Naples as Carty 50 explains that if they have the confidence to do it the man they are doing it for will buy right in. She was teaching a free two-hour class called Exotic Dancing 101: Find Your Inner Beauty and Grace. She begins the class very slowly. The women are laughing like girls at a middle school dance a little embarrassed to be on the dance floor. They make jokes under their breath reassuring their own insecurities until Carty forces them out of their cluster. “Every woman is a wonderful gift to the world” Carty tells them trying to ease some of the tension… Comments are the sole responsibility of the person posting them.
