Rap goes to church
St. Petersburg Times – Aug 24, 2007
Lyndsey Young 16 attends 3rd Rail because "it's not traditional. The kneel stand kneel stand thing doesn't do it for me. " You can even break dance at Crossover which appeals to 18-year-old Jarvis "Jabo" Jackson. "When I think about 3rd Rail I think about the word 'refreshed' " he said adding that the experience gives him "a boldness to go out to preach Jesus. " Relevant Church which meets at the Italian Club in Ybor City also embraces a not so traditional approach. But Relevant is geared more toward people who dig rock 'n' roll. "If the church doesn't meet people where they are and isn't relevant to what's going on in their lives I think we miss the connection" said Carl von dem Bussche 30 director of music and arts at Relevant Church.

“It’s a thrill to dance in this competition with all the historical significance of Buenos Aires” said Eduardo in a short break while waiting for the semi-finals to begin. Eduardo and Cyrena are vying for top honors in ballroom one of the two categories of tango dance style at the championship (the other category is stage). Stage is the more stylized and choreographed version while the ballroom category is the more traditional neighborhood-style tango that developed in Buenos Aires in the early part of the 20th century.

It’s not exactly outside the realm of possibility. Several minutes before Jason Schadt a fellow performer in the Travelers Dance Group explained that thanks to the recent humid weather the wood of the floor is stickier than usual. He lifted his foot up and pointed to a small barely healed-over break saying “Your skin can sometimes just want to rip a little. “So why practice in a place where your feet can possibly break open? Well given that the troupe has only scant days until its performance at the Englert – where it only gets around 16 hours to practice beforehand – any room with enough space starts to look pretty good. In fact it was that lack of room that initially inspired Travelers Dance co-founder Angie Hayes to create some of the group’s most innovative numbers. After working with family snapshots in one piece dealing with memory Hayes became interested in using more photography and video in her numbers. “Because space is so hard to come by I thought ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we could layer and add depth like that instead?’ ” she said… Another piece in tonight’s performance “The Sidetrack Lounge” the only entirely new number for the group uses video shot by Iowa City photographer Sandra Dyas. The original footage which features local bands setting up and tearing down their equipment was then layered with new video taken of the dance group while rehearsing. The combination of the two images is the backdrop for the dance troupe’s final piece. Hayes who started work on “Sidetrack Lounge” almost a year ago has yet to actually see the finished product though she said with a laugh “It’s definitely playing in my head. Last night when I was editing I honestly thought to myself ‘This is so much better than I thought it would be. ‘ “Despite the seemingly last-minute preparation for tonight’s performance Hayes and the rest of the performers (seven total) remain surprisingly relaxed.
