The shock that the couple felt was shared by the entire dance world. Smuin was a major figure in American dance having formed his troupeafter bringing San Francisco Ballet to national prominence. Theleadership of Smuin Ballet was taken by Celia Fushille-Burke and thecompany carried on – with Kubo making his unofficial debut at a galaconcert in May and joining the company earlier this month for a mixedbill. Thanks to a week off in San Francisco Kubo was able to acceptColorado Ballet artistic director Gil Bogg’s invitation to return for aformal send-off with his former company. “I’ve spent half of my dancing life here” he said of years thatproved crucial to his development as a dancer.
