Nureyev: The Life By Julie Kavanagh (Pantheon Books)
New Republic – Nov 20, 2007
) At first Nureyev was circumspect about the media hype. He found the reporters intrusive–”In Russia” he sardonically observed “only the secret police does this. ” When Richard Avedon got him drunk and photographed him dancing in the nude Nureyev appeared at his door the next day and demanded the negatives: “I’ve left Russia–that in itself is a scandal. Now I’m doing exactly what they expect of me… (Margot Fonteyn: “Was it nice?”) By the early 1990s he owned seven homes and was worth more than $20 million. Nureyev’s high-flying lifestyle masked a web of destructive impulses and debilitating fears. He was haunted by the idea that the KGB would get him (and there were plans to break his legs and destroy his career) and he knew very well that family and friends back in the Soviet Union were being punished for his defiance. For the rest of his life he harbored a consuming desire to throw his success in the face of the Soviet authorities–to do and with a vengeance “exactly what they expect of me. ” When a friend traveled to Russia in 1971 Nureyev asked her to deliver expensive fur coats and evening gowns to his mother and family in Ufa–not for them but (as the friend recalled) to “show the Soviets his worth. ” At unguarded moments Nureyev admitted that he was desperately lonely. He never fully mastered English but neither did he spend much time with other Russian artists or emigres (he even shied from speaking his native tongue to Russian restaurant waiters embarrassed by his provincial accent) preferring instead to forge ahead with a trail of adoring fans in tow.
Soundbite: The Hives
UCLA Daily Bruin – The UCLA Daily Bruin – Nov 20, 2007
? the album locks into a steady groove of danceable party tracks heavy on the backbeat and hand claps. ?Return the Favour? races through power chords at breakneck speed while the chorus of the cowbell-heavy ?Hey Little World? is melodically narcotic. ?Square One Here I Come? is essentially a new-wave garage rock update of Alice Cooper?s ?Lost in America? with a jump-up-and-shout chant of ?No job! No skills! No money! No nothing!? The marching rhythm of ?You Dress up for Armageddon? breaks for a Sgt. Pepper?s type chorus and the album?s light-hearted dance beat takes a break on the eerie Addams Family-esque ?Puppet on a String? with the vocals backed only by piano and hand claps. The album closes with the party in full force on ?Bigger Hole to Fill? with the throbbing bass hypnotic guitar riffs and droning vocals creating a techno vibe. The album?s glaring weakness is its lyrics. With the notable exception of the social commentary in ?Square One Here I Come? most of the tracks have repetitive superficial lyrics.

I dont want to see Jerry Rice pull some triple axle somersault flippy thing. I also dont want to see him pull a hamstring either. I dont watch the showbut there are plenty of Actors and Actresses out there will satisfy the audiences craving to watch people better than you already dance. ESPN:What is the deal with ESPN? They broadcast Poker almost every day now… And the All-Star ballots. it seems like the same people are on it each year so therefore the same people are playing in the All-Star game. Football:I must say football did make some good disciplinary actions against those players that decided to break the law over the summer. but the NFL needs to get there players under control or else the sport is going under. And to me it seems like more players are playing for the name on the back not the logo on the helmet. Basketball:I really dont have anything on BAsketball. Because i dont follow it much.

The Peace Drug
Washington Post – Nov 20, 2007
" After a slow start regulators and legislators cracked down hard. Millions of dollars in enforcement efforts were unable to end abuse of psychedelic drugs but they effectively stamped out sanctioned research into their healing potential. A small group of psychedelic researchers and therapists willing to break the law continued their work clandestinely. A much larger group did not flout the law but waited in the wings and is now emerging. Experience had convinced these therapists that psychedelics along with significant risks had potential for even more significant benefits. This may have been especially true of MDMA. Mithoefer states the case in an article he wrote for a book of scholarly essays Psychedelic Medicine: Social Clinical and Legal Perspectives:"The reported results [of early therapeutic use] include decreased fear and anxiety increased openness trust and interpersonal closeness improved therapeutic alliance enhanced recall of past events with an accompanying ability to examine them with new insight calm objectivity and compassionate self-acceptance… Very liberal and very experimental. "There was this tradition of all-night dance parties until sunrise under the palm trees using psychedelics" Doblin says. It was bacchanalian yes but Doblin found something else in the experience something "therapeutic and spiritual. ""I was like man this is the kind of energy the kind of psychic stuff" that could lead him to the personal growth he had been yearning for. Ironically says Doblin "this was right as research into therapeutic uses was pretty much being shut down. "Doblin’s world was legally circumscribed in another way as well.

finding Sao Paulo’s nightlife is not always easy. I’m on my way down the southern Brazilian coast and fancy a big weekend to break up the beaches and luckily I’m armed. It’s indicative of Sao Paulo’s cultural status that it has its own version of the… A few blocks down we wander to Ana’s club pick Studio SP (Rua InĂ¡cio Pereira da Rocha 170) ? innocuous entrance small queue huge bouncer. We clamber up metallic stairs and through the doors into a dark loft space faintly doused in red fans hanging from the rafters and Mr Big Stuff blasting through the speakers. A bohemian crowd packs the small dance floor and swells the bar where they present cards on which a tab is kept to be settled on exit. A man and a woman last seen gyrating on the dance floor climb on-stage and play a live electro set her singing him mostly pouting. Ana had given us a splurge of tips and with Vila Madalena we’d taken the safe bet deciding against Barra Funda. The email described it as “Sao Paulo’s Shoreditch area. It used to be dangerous (it still is a bit) industrial and empty but now some trendy bars have started popping up.
