More than 40 people will join professional dance group Hands and Feet for a performance a dance show called Liberation of the Urban Tribesman. A preview of the show at Hartlepool’s Town Hall Theatre on Friday was performed on board HMS Trincomalee featuring choreographer and dancer Garner Harris and Mervin ‘Tommy’ Thomas (top) who provides Afro-Caribbean hand drumming. Drawing on many forms of dance from break dancing to ballet the show will be set around a steel cage which Garner uses to illustrate a man’s struggle to be free. The finale features professional dancers plus local people including members of Warren Road Day Centre and students from Hartlepool Sixth Form College who have been learning dance skills in workshops with Garner. Claire Munroe of Hartlepool Borough Council’s museums and heritage service said: “This remarkable and inspiring show captures all the struggle passion ? and ultimately elation ? in the epic battle for freedom. “Bursting with energy and mesmerising dance routines it’s a memorable and dramatic conclusion to our programme of celebrations. “The show is part of the council’s Window on the world ? across the sea to new beginnings programme of events celebrating the abolition of slavery HMS Trincomalee’s 190th anniversary and the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

“They’ve become the people we miss up north” said Helen DeMartini a 63-year-old from New York who has been in Section F with her husband Howard since FGCU’s second season. “We’ve rather adopted them. ”Truth be told the dancing didn’t begin until years after the first wave of the Legends contingent flocked to the arena. The retirees came to watch basketball — not cut a rug. The games made them feel at home. The transplants moved to Florida like so many others for the golf courses sunsets and beach walks. But they missed being involved with the sports they’d watched their kids play… Comments are the sole responsibility of the person posting them. Break our rules and we will ban you. Sons & Daughters from Glasgow are ready. We know a little of what to expect here and climb onto the stage via a frankly dangerous rickety chair-step. What if one of our precious musicians were to fall and break a finger or worse a nail? Tour cancelled? The rock show is a hard bitten success the stage sound is dreadful no-one knows if it’s in time but somehow we pull through. Mainly thanks to the packed crowd who are clapping furiously while managing to avoid crumpling their amazing clothes… Towards the end of the set we play DANCE ME IN and the crowd are so loving it we sense an encore scenario. except we don’t do that any more so after announcing two more tunes we make our way back down to the gas chamber for a quick illegal fag followed by a jaunt to the t-shirt desk to meet some people who want to buy CDs and stuff. You guys are nice! Thanks Manchester.
