When Christmas Carols Are Sung for a Cause
OhmyNews International – Dec 24, 2007
Caroling is one of the oldest Christmas customs. The word “carol” comes from the French “carole” which means a song that accompanies a dance. In medieval times carolers would form a circle and dance singing songs. Carols will be around this year as well but some enthusiasts are surely going to make Christmas different with the same carols. Pain brings sisters’ friends together
Rocky Mountain News – Dec 24, 2007
on Sunday they and a few of their parents began arriving at the pavilion in Cheesman Park carrying plastic bags of tissues and candles to pass around. Some friends of Katy’s cried as they carried two large collages of photographs of her holding them up for TV cameras. Another friend wandered through the crowd of more than 100 talking into a tape recorder recounting a story about taking Chase to their homecoming dance at East High School. The tape which was passed around among the sisters’ friends will be sent to comfort Katy who is recovering in a Casper hospital. “She came out of this and now we need to be here for her” East junior Helen Katich a friend of Katy’s who started the recorder on its way told the crowd. Brief remarks by Katich and a couple other family friends were the only program for the vigil. That and the spontaneous singing of Amazing Grace as the sun set and the candles flickered… “She was very spunky and kinda witty and sarcastic” said best friend Katie O’Neill whose mom described Chase as a petite blond force in the Reese Witherspoon mold. Many of Chase’s friends – who graduated from East in spring 2006 – had returned home from college for winter break when they got the news. Friends of Katy’s a senior at East said goodbye for their break on Thursday and Friday. East Principal John Youngquist who attended the vigil said he plans to open the school at noon on Wednesday. Students and families who want to talk or just be together can come to the school he said. Counselors will be available. mitchelln@RockyMountainNews.
