Diddy Swizz Beatz and Ciara in a very impromptu but magical historic hip-hop moment last August. After Diddy had the crowd singing there was a momentary break and the DJ announced that he would be playing a record and wanted everyone to sing along if they knew it. Only he didn’t mention that the person whose song it was would be there too… wore a throwback red Adidas jumpsuit. They challenged each other to a breakdance face-off. Brown started his set with an animated short in which sword-wielding foot soldiers sent by a winged alien playa hata interrupted Chris on a hot date. The animated Brown apparently has degrees in butt kicking hover-cycle driving and jet-pack flying. It all culminated in the cartoon Brown’s crash-landing which set up the real Brown’s impressive entrance via the high way — not the highway but the high way as in lowered from the ceiling on ropes. Earlier in the show Bow Wow made his own fly entrance.

Das was the first guru who trained Laxmipriya and her equally talented husband in Odissi. The festival was launched last year as a tribute to Das often referred to as a “Guru of all Gurus” in Odissi. “The break for Guru Kelucharan came with a solo piece in a dance-drama on Devi Bhasmasura. His performance as the Nataraja under the direction of Guru Pankaj Charan Das established him as a mature soloist. In the role of Mohini was Laxmipriya. From that day till the time they married they were always partners in all duets. Else Laxmipriya would dance to a rhythm provided by Guruji” recalled Das.

He offered to carry her heavy instrument as a way to spark conversation. The former Willa Jane Sizemore became his wife of nearly 68 years. Rockhill supplemented his teaching income by playing at the Spanish Castle a popular dance club south of Seattle where Jimi Hendrix got an early break. He was also a professional musician in Seattle for several years playing first trumpet in the Seattle Symphony. “He’d look at you or nod his head and you knew just what to do” said friend Bruce Caldwell executive manager of the Washington Music Educators Association. “He would always educate you in a positive way. Rockhill had been a Rotary Club member since 1945 and in 1979 was elected to the Renton City Council and served one term.
