Jill Murray writes new breakdancing book `Break On Through’
Toronto Star – Feb 16, 2008
com – entertainment – Jill Murray writes new breakdancing book `Break On Through’ Sexism parents who make you move to the ‘burbs – just part of life for a young female breakdancer February 16 2008 Raju Mudhar Entertainment Reporter Nadine "Lady Six Sky" Durant is having a "parents just don’t understand" life. A b-girl to the core the 15-year-old’s parents have decided to uproot her from the only home she’s known in Parkdale to the suburban hell that is Rivercrest. A recent returnee to her native Montreal she used to live like her main character just down the road from the infamous Toronto ‘hood where the book starts. It helped inform her story of her breakdancing heroine as did the author’s own adventure in the world of six steps top rocks and windmills. In addition to those similarities the book is written in the first person – so the question is did any other autobiographical elements make it into the story?"It’s not autobiographical at all" Murray insists. "There’s no similarity between me and the main character on any level… "I think everyone’s experience is unique but I know in the past there have been people who have been frustrated by the male-dominated aspect not because they don’t want to work themselves hard enough to become good enough to compete on that level but because they feel there’s an assumption that they can’t" she says. "I don’t want to pin that experience on anyone in particular but it does happen and I think it is fairly well documented in Martha Cooper and Nika Kramer’s We B*Girls which came out about a year and a half ago. "It will be a much more celebratory affair tonight at the free all-ages event at the Street Dance Academy (160 Spadina Ave. 2nd floor 416-840-4934) where Break On Through gets its proper Toronto launch with performances by emcees Abdominal Sunny D. More or Les and DJ Dalia. Murray will also be giving out an exclusive all-Canadian mix tape created by More or Les for the book. The mix tape will only be available at events associated with Break On Through.

Let’s meditate with Salsa
Khaleej Times – Feb 16, 2008
“The administration-management jobs which I used to do meant nothing to me they were there to fill up my pocket in order to cover all the necessary payments. After sometime I realised that I was not living my inner truth that something within me was being suffocated. Biba used to be very active and involved with the Salsa dancing crowd in Dubai throughout 2005 and 2006. But around that time her interest in yoga began to deepen. Once she started practising Yoga more regularly the night-lifestyle did not suit her anymore. She also decided to take a break from her Martial Arts (Tae Kwan Do) practice so as to dedicate herself fully to yoga. Now she is a full-fledged yoga teacher and intends to pick up salsa once again this time as an instructor… But around that time her interest in yoga began to deepen. Once she started practising Yoga more regularly the night-lifestyle did not suit her anymore. She also decided to take a break from her Martial Arts (Tae Kwan Do) practice so as to dedicate herself fully to yoga. Now she is a full-fledged yoga teacher and intends to pick up salsa once again this time as an instructor. Creative as she is here is what she has devised: An intro class to the joyous Latino Dances plus the dance and Martial Arts workout with a sprinkling of yoga and meditation all in one. The classes are only for women out of consideration for those who cannot attend mixed classes. So the focus is on bringing out the feminine elegance.

Vera will you be my Valentine?: My Ode to the Vera Project
Seattle Post Intelligencer – Feb 16, 2008
And while local music was so important to my friends and me in junior high and high school the places to see it for the all-ages crowd came and went. There was the closing of venues such as the Velvet Elvis and the RKCNDY. The Teen Dance Ordinance. But in 2000 as well the Vera Project come up out of the rubble of the lost all-ages projects that came before… They have moved around a lot but now call the Seattle Center home. Vera doesn’t only provide a safe alcohol and tobacco-free space for teens to enjoy a wide diversity of music it also provides an important outlet for artistic expression. They have art classes breakdance classes studio recording classes and an inexpensive recording studio. Much of their operation is run by volunteers and mostly volunteers ages 14-24 making it true to its mission of being a place for youth run by youth. Vera no doubt changes and saves lives by giving emerging bands and artists a place to perform and display their work and giving teens a place to share their mutual interests in music and art. And as we continue to see schools slash funding for art and music maybe there never has been more of important time for this type of organization. Also this is Seattle for God’s sake.
