Planet B-Boy – Movies – Review – New York Times
New York Times – Mar 21, 2008
” This brisk nonfiction feature directed by Benson Lee makes his case showing international teams of break dancers — or b-boys — battling to win best-in-the-nation status in their home countries then going on to compete in the 2005 world finals at the Volkswagenhalle in Braunschweig Germany. After a prologue sketching break dancing’s rise and fall in 1980s America and its subsequent international embrace Mr. Lee tracks teams from several countries as they devise and perfect their routines. Certain nationalities are known for particular strengths: the French for their muscular expressiveness the Japanese for their innovative choreography the Koreans for their technical excellence and conceptual boldness. (One of the two Korean teams competing in the world finals retells the history of North and South Korea in dance. ) Nagging flaws keep this documentary from realizing its potential.
Williams In A Dance Mood On Third Solo Disc
Billboard – Mar 21, 2008
Music World Entertainment CEO Matthew Knowles played the project for Billboard. com last week and insisted “It’s a pop and dance record but don’t call it dance. ” But with its reliance on synth-y driving bass samples electronic keys and bopping drums it’s difficult not to classify the record as dance. There’s a clear move away from the gospel-leaning direction of 2004′s “Do You Know” which has sold 78000 copies in the United States according to Nielsen SoundScan. However Knowles insists “Unexpected” isn’t that much of a stretch considering the characteristically quiet Williams spent the bulk of 2007 playing the sexy character Shug Avery in Oprah Winfrey’s Chicago-based cast of “The Color Purple. ” “Destiny’s Child fans bought Michelle’s last album” said Knowles… With ‘Unexpected’ she’ll be able to appeal to those fans and reach back to the 16-year-old audience and hit mainstream pop radio. ” CM8ShowAd(“Middle”); “Unexpected” boasts production from Stargate Rico Love the Heavyweights Wayne Wilkins Andrew Frampton and SoulShock & Karl. “We Break the Dawn” is the first single set to drop in April while the Stargate-produced “Stop This Car” is the second. ” Here is the track list for “Unexpected:”"Hello Heartbreak”"We Break Tthe Dawn”"Lucky Girl”"The Greatest”"Til the End of the World”"Private Party”"Stop This Car”"Unexpected”"Thank You”"Too Young for Love”.
