Instructor teaches new ways to bust a move
Las Vegas Sun NV
But when she thinks of the more complex moves that Daniel might learn as he grows older Lorraine Bourke said she gets a bit more concerned. “I don’t mind the poses but the hand stands and the head spins get me worried” she said. Ryan Reyes a break dance instructor with Las Vegas-based Competitive Edge Dance Center was the instructor at the event and led his young audience through a wide range of athletic spins kicks and poses. Even as Reyes increased the pace toward the end of the session the children were able to keep up. The lessons culminated with a “freestyle session” where everyone had a chance to show off their newfound moves. Although many other forms of dance require athleticism the art of break-dancing Reyes said requires passion above all else. “Having strength and flexibility helps but your passion overcomes everything and makes it so much better” Reyes 18 said.

Cheryl Burke: ‘Dancing With the Stars’ tour

We have kids and older women and men as well who come in and want to learn ballroom dances but we also offer hip-hop and ballet and jazz classes as well. Q: Is it hard to do it all – run the school do the TV show and go on tour?A: It’s been really challenging. Every little break we have I’ll be at my studio but it’s hard because of the tour schedule. Last summer was the first time I really had a lot of time off so I was at the studio a lot. For the next few months I’m going to be doing the tour but there are a few dates when I’ll be able to come back. 20 and 26 for instance I’ll be doing big group classes (in salsa and jive).

Junior Shawn Ahern is piloting the effort to start a breakdancing group on campus along with his friend (year) Tom Sommo. Ahern said both him and Sommo had been break dancing independently long before they met. Both students are dance majors and discovered they share the same interest in break dancing. “It’s not too often you find someone who’s passionate about it and has been doing it a while” Ahern said. Ahern said he grew up in a dance studio and has been classically trained in many different forms of dance. His interest in breakdancing came later when he was a freshman in high school.
