Junior Shawn Ahern is piloting the effort to start a breakdancing group on campus along with his friend (year) Tom Sommo. Ahern said both him and Sommo had been break dancing independently long before they met. Both students are dance majors and discovered they share the same interest in break dancing. “It’s not too often you find someone who’s passionate about it and has been doing it a while” Ahern said. Ahern said he grew up in a dance studio and has been classically trained in many different forms of dance. His interest in breakdancing came later when he was a freshman in high school.

CORPORATE BRANDING EXPLOITATION2005 BATTLE OF THE YEARBut while many of our cultural exports are the result of aggressive persuasion through marketing and other means there are some things that cross borders and spontaneously spread more through a shared spirit of goodwill and common interest than a desire to funnel foreign currency back to the Land of Mickey Mouse. ?Planet B-Boy? a documentary about the evolution of break dancing tells the story of one such grassroots adoption of a distinctly American art form and how it has come to belong more to the world than the country that created it. The film screens Friday through Sunday at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. The story centers on the Battle of the Year an annual break dancing competition held in Austria of all places.
