"Earlier this week CTV announced it would not broadcast "Canadian Idol" in 2009 "as a result of the current economic climate" and noted versions of the show in Russia Germany and the Netherlands each took similar breaks and returned for another season. CTV’s announcement came a week after the popular "So You Think You Can Dance Canada" wrapped up its first season. Hosted by Ben Mulroney "Canadian Idol" finished its sixth season last fall and remained high in television ratings getting an average of 1. 47 million viewers in September. Still Werner said "Idol" staff was told Monday the decision was an effort to preserve cash. "We’ve always been told it was touch and go to begin with and my understanding is CTV is having a lot of problems with a variety of their traditional sponsors for all kinds of shows" Werner said.
