YMCA Inspires Teens Through Break Dance

Even NY1?s Roger Clark busted some moves while filing the following report. Johnny Figueroa is the center of attention as he shows off break dancing moves at the YMCA in Flushing Queens. “I like the way it works out my body it feels mad good I just have a lot of fun with it” says Figueroa. He is part of the YMCA?s Teen Center program which creates gathering places for young people across the city.

That could prove difficult for Dow however which has promised to add $100 million to the $15 billion Rohm & Haas price tag for every month passed the Jan. Meanwhile Dow is taking PIC to court in an attempt to get some of the promised $2. 5 billion break-up fee. But that could take years. No one from Dow Chemical or any of the companies mentioned above was available for comment.

Faulkner also hopes her program will eventually spread to other cities and towns. Hadar Karni an eighth-grader at Lesher Junior High participated in Break It! the first few years of the program’s existence. Though she hasn’t done break dancing in a while she still does other kinds of dance and has fond memories of the club. “I think about how close we all were” she said. “We had a lot of fun meeting new people and performing at other schools. “She said the club functioned as a support system where members could talk about their problems and have an incentive to do well in school. To participate students were required to sign a contract promising to stay away from drugs alcohol gangs and violence.

Adult dance classes added to The Studio’s winter/spring schedule

Returning students will come to class at the regular time and are welcome to try new classes during this open enrollment period. The Studio offers ongoing classes in ballet tap jazz and hip hop for children of all ages; dance for people with special needs; and classes for adults. The popular ballroom dance series and morning Stretch-a-cise classes with Ron Walker will begin again on Wednesday January 14. Please call 463-9501 for times.

The 17-year-old senior at Fenton High School has been dancing at Fenton School of Dance Academy and Dance Extension since she was 3 years old. She spends at least seven to nine hours a week there after school. When she is not dancing or in class Heather is working on the school yearbook staff which she has been doing since her sophomore year.  With all of that Heather is ready to head off to college and escape the boring high school life.  “High school is getting to be the same” she said.
