YMCA Inspires Teens Through Break Dance

Even NY1?s Roger Clark busted some moves while filing the following report. Johnny Figueroa is the center of attention as he shows off break dancing moves at the YMCA in Flushing Queens. “I like the way it works out my body it feels mad good I just have a lot of fun with it” says Figueroa. He is part of the YMCA?s Teen Center program which creates gathering places for young people across the city.

The Hallandale Beach resident born in Puerto Rico made his mark in the Latin dance world in the 1940s and 50s with dance moves now considered standards of the genre. “When you saw him dance you could see the music” said Craddock his dance partner of 11 years. Raised in New York Aguilar was one of the first dancers to break racial barriers on the dance floor of the famous Palladium Ballroom and through his performances for world leaders like U. President Dwight Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth of England. In his 66-year dance career he invented more than 100 dance steps helped coreograph movies like The Mambo Kings and mastered the salsa pattern known as la clave.
