"They actually asked for some older people to do a swing dance" said Rita Kaller 55. "We hate to admit that but it’s true" said Bill Kaller 65. And off stage hip-hop dancers from "Poetry in Motion" began "pop-and-locking" their limbs in preparation to close the show with an eye-popping break-dance performance. Dancer Dominic Vendegna 20 said that during the whole performance with dance numbers rooted in traditions from all over the world – Africa China India Spain – he just went with the flow. "I was just dancing to all the different music because it’s all got its own beat its own rhythm so it’s something new to me and I can sit there and kind of groove on it" he said. "I listen to mostly funk mostly rap but you can groove to anything. Anybody can dance to anything any way they want.

When the ?b-boys? and ?b-girls? spin around the follow and throw their legs in the air it seems physically impossible to accomplish. “With all the stress of school homework sometimes you need to let loose and have fun and learn a cool move” says dance instructor Godfrey Elder. “You can express yourself in many ways it’s not about competing just dance” says break dancer Pamela Castro. The break dancing program at the YMCA is not just about the dancing but also about learning other skills that the youth can use for the rest of their lives. “They learn how to lead how to work as a team and also how to build friendships” says Flushing YMCA teen director Lisette Martell. “Discipline you have to have hard work you can never quit. You have to stick to your guns and everything” says Jay Figueroa.
