Academy Awards Recap: Singing Dancing and Slumdog

The first for Documentary Feature went to the riveting Man on Wire which chronicled the story of Frenchman Philippe Petit’s high-wire walk between the NYC Twin Towers in 1974. When Petit himself got to the podium he jokingly thanked with “The shortest speech in scar history. YES!” However that wasn’t all as Petit let slip “but I break my own rules” and continued his acceptance in true “real life” character by balancing his new scar on his chin. Not to be overshadowed the second Documentary award for Short Subject was given to the film Smile Pinki. The best in Sound Editing was handed over to The Dark Knight while Sound Mixing and Best Editing belonged to the multiple nominated Slumdog Millionaire which tugged at the heartstrings after Indian winner Resul Pookutty paid tribute to his country and people.

So it was a joke but when the press asked me about it when I started with the Play-House of the Ridiculous I would say that I was saving my real name for when I did something good. But it took so long I got stuck with Penny Arcade. Q: How would you describe the show?A: It’s a blend of political humanism and erotic dancing or politics sex and reality with a huge audience dance break. There’s comedic monologues and pathos and it’s talking about prostitution from somebody who has worked in prostitution in a way that’s never talked about except among prostitutes. Basically I created it to prove two things: that content and sensationalism cannot coexist and that there aren’t 30 things that make us different from one another there are four. And they’re not important. I’ve been branded a bad girl and an outsider all my life and at a certain point I realized I had an obligation to speak from that position.
