Goldrush adds a fresh twirl to square dancing

“They called me a nerd and I said ‘Keep making fun of me and I’ll drag you to square dancing class with me. ‘ ” For Byars the goal is not just to get more young people interested in dancing but also to change the stodgy image that many people have of square dancing. “I try to use their music hip-hop techno” he says during a break. “I use rap sometimes although I have to speed it up because it’s too slow. Square dance isn’t in the barn anymore. Twice a month the Gold-rush dancers make the trek from as far away as Novato and Yuba City to attend four-hour rehearsals in Cordelia and rangevale (Sacramento County). None of the parents seem to mind though as they wander around the perimeter of the floor offering advice and support.

But the music and dance carried on well into the eve. And so it will Thursday when Shadesofredd brings the group back together for its annual Dance Showcase held in the main parking lot of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Dubbed “Decades of Dance” the event will celebrate music and dance culture by presenting styles as widely varied as Capoeira break dancing and African tribal. Let it be said these crews have mad skills: U4RIA Dance Studio of Coral Springs a group of movers and shakers who performed on America’s Best Dance Crew will throw down some well-choreographed sets as will the heralded Miami collective Boogie Squad. The party won’t stop at just dance either: Shadesofredd promises spoken word poetry DJs and live music to boot plus a tent courtesy of Red Bull free food and a whole new line of T-shirts to be sold.
